Artist Statement

My art stems from my love of nature and concern with environmental issues.

This series began years ago when I read an article about the number of birds that are in decline here in Georgia. I’ve always had a strong interest in birds, my parents were bird watchers with bird books and binoculars on hand, and I grew up with a love of birds. But reading about bird decline brought a new awareness to me.

There are approximately 900 different bird species in America (not counting Mexico or Canada). Of those, close to half of the species are in decline. There are 180 different bird species that are in decline presented in this installation, about one third of the total number of birds that are in decline.
Some of the main causes of bird population decline are loss of habitat, pesticides, collision with buildings, and climate change.

My series “Birds of America in Decline” uses asphalt and cement/plaster to refer to the loss of habitat, the streets and buildings which are replacing natural habitats. The bird images I use come from Audubon’s “Birds of America” prints/images to refer to a different time period when birds were more numerous. The use of silhouettes is to suggest the birds as shadows left after the different species disappear. During Audubon’s time the use of silhouettes of people departed on tombstones was common, the silhouettes representing loss.

My "Wildflowers of the Southeast in Decline" is a new series that focuses on wildflowers that are in decline mainly due to loss of habitat.
